Ribbon Blonde Is The Pretty Hair Highlighting Technique That You Need To Know About

Publish date: 2024-08-24

You know us, we can fan-girl over pretty hair colour inspo any day of the week. But the latest technique to capture our attention (and hearts) is Ribbon Blonde. Coined by the experts at Los Pastel's dreamy salon (sadly based in Australia, but with a bunch of inspo on Insta) Ribbon Blonde is exactly as pretty as it sounds and it's a beautiful way to add in some extra dimension.

The trend takes delicate sections of hair and weaves ribbons of light blonde amongst darker sections to create a gorgeous mix of tones that adds depth to hair.

If you want to ease up on the bleach, it's a technique that can work in synergy with your natural hair colour to complement your shade and bring out the best of your God-given hair tone. The trick? “Leaving lots of natural through the interior, to make the blonde pop on top,” say the experts at Los Pastel.

So, if you're bored of drab-feeling strands, it's a gorgeous middle-ground between natural, non-committal colour and a brighter, blonde that requires more upkeep.

As for the wizardry behind the pretty colour, it's essentially a high-contrast and slightly chunkier form of balayage, with gleams of light expertly lifted to create a harmonious balance between the darker and lighter shades. Ribbons of blonde unwrap against a more natural backdrop.

You can sharpen or soften the contrast depending on how dark your natural base is and how statement you want to make the style. We love tonal ribbon blonde in a mix of buttery, sandy, champagne and platinum shades, which gives a subtle lift to dirty blondes. But we also love 90s ribbon blonde which creates a piecier, chunkier colour clash between darker brunettes and bright blonde.

And if you're looking for a colour with low commitment, you can get the bright, lifted shade with minimal upkeep. Since balayage won't create harsh lines at your roots, you can go for touch-ups as little or often as you like, depending on how fresh or lived-in you want it to look. Either way, it will remain looking seamless and beautiful. Our kind of colour.
